Final Project: "Computer-Mediated, Audio-visual System for Musical Composition / Performance

You are to craft, compose, and present / perform a "Computer-mediated, Audio-visual music experience" The deliverables for the final project include:

  • milestone presentations
  • webpage documenting your system/performance
  • a polished video demo

Due date

  • milestone 1 (in-class, Monday, 3/2/2026): something working that gives a preview of the intended aesthetic experience
  • milestone 2 (in-class, Monday, 3/9/2026): an unpolished but "complete" experience and narrative
  • all material submitted (website + Canvas noon Wednesday 3/18/2026): final project website, polished media (audio/video), title/description, code, data files, README
  • final showcase: Wednesday 7pm, 3/18/2026, CCRMA Stage

Aspect 1: "Computer-Mediated"

  • take advantage of the computer in a compelling/non-trivial way
  • for example: algorithms, sound synthesis, interactive control, generative systems, etc.

Aspect 2: "Audio-Visual"

2024/hw4 HW4 "Composing with Perception"] as part of the audio component

  • visual: interpret this as you'd like;
    • example 1: involve visuals in a core/non-peripheral way: e.g., design gestures/movement mapped to sound
    • example 2: use ChuGL for real-time graphics/animation coupled with audio
    • example 3: create an audiovisual work of fixed media (e.g., video)
    • example 4: ?

Aspect 3: Aesthetics of Presentation "Fixed Media or Live Performance"

  • design not only the system (sound, music, interaction, code), but ***design the presentation***, being ever mindful of the aesthetic experience
  • aim for 3-7 minute per piece
  • keep in mind setup/transition time

Deliverables

polished documentation on webpage | upload to canvas

  • 0) portfolio-grade video documentation + description
  • 1) source code + sound files for your performance
  • 2) written documentation (and any [optional] program notes / bios)
  • 3) the fixed media or live performance
